Let's talk about someone who was forsaken, someone on whom the whole world turned their back. Someone on whom God the father turned his back. Someone who felt more alone than we could ever know. Someone the world crucified. Yet he was innocent, without blame. Willingly he laid down his life that we who are guilty could have eternal life. We could have forgiveness for sins. We who are guilty could have purpose and meaning for our lives. We who deserve nothing could have the Holy Spirit take residence inside of us. The hymn writer had it correct when he said “How can it be that God could love a soul like me?"

My friend, the good news is this: Romans 5:6 "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly." Christ died for the ungodly, you and me. Not only did he die but, just as important, he rose from the grave: Romans 8:34 "Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us."

Good news is only good to those who have received it. Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God," For all have sinned: that's bad news. What do sinners deserve? Romans 6:23a "For the wages of sin is death": spiritual death, separation from God in a place called hell. I know what you're thinking; "where is the good news in knowing sinners deserve to go to hell?" But wait! Let's read the rest of this verse in Romans 6:23b "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Did you catch that? God's gift of eternal life is through Jesus Christ.

So how do I get this gift through Jesus Christ? Jesus said "I am the Way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the father but by me." (John 14:6). This gift of eternal life only comes by or through Jesus Christ. How could I make this gift mine? How does this good news get applied to me? How can I be saved? Romans 10:13 "for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."  You simply ask Jesus for eternal life. You pray or ask him to save you from what you and I deserve, hell. This verse tells us whoever asks shall or will be saved. You can pray a prayer like this:

Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner deserving of hell. I understand that you died for me. I am placing my complete trust in you.
Forgive me for all my sins. Please come into my heart and save me right now. Amen

Friend, if you just prayed this prayer, Jesus has a special promise for you found in John 5:24 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
